Over 1700+ F-1 visas revoked, prompting legal pushback across U.S.
Since late March 2025, over 1,700 international students have had their F-1 visas revoked or legal status terminated across 270 U.S. colleges, often for minor infractions like unpaid traffic tickets or administrative delays. A CNN investigation revealed that the DHS flagged these students after routine traffic stops and data mismatches, leading to abrupt detentions, canceled visas, and mass confusion. Some students only learned of their visa revocations after being notified by their universities. Legal pushback has resulted in temporary restraining orders in multiple states, pausing deportations and restoring status for some.
DOGE granted access to sensitive immigration records
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been granted access to a confidential Justice Department database containing decades of immigration court data, including asylum interviews and legal case records. The move is part of a broader Trump administration effort to build a centralized system for tracking immigrants. DOGE has already tapped into data from the IRS, HUD, and Labor Department, sparking privacy concerns. The IRS’s acting chief recently resigned over one such data-sharing deal. Critics warn the effort could deepen surveillance of immigrant communities.
JD Vance visits India: Trade talks, Tariffs & H-1B visa tensions
U.S. Vice President JD Vance began a four-day visit to India on Monday, blending personal stops with high-stakes diplomacy. While he visits the Taj Mahal and attends a family wedding, the real focus is on trade negotiations and growing alarm over U.S. visa policies. India is pushing to finalize a trade deal before Trump’s 90-day tariff pause expires, following a sudden 26% hike on Indian goods. Meanwhile, visa revocations, including H-1B and student cases - have stirred backlash across the Indian tech and academic communities. Vance’s meetings with PM Modi are seen as pivotal for resetting US-India ties at a tense moment in global geopolitics.
