U.S. begins social media checks for Harvard visa applicants
The U.S. will now screen social media accounts of all Harvard-bound visa applicants including students, faculty, and visitors to flag antisemitic content. Ordered by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the policy lacks clear definitions and may require private accounts to be made public. Critics call it a threat to free speech and academic freedom.
U.S. freezes student visa interviews to expand social media vetting
The Trump administration has halted all new student visa interviews as it prepares to expand social media screening for international applicants. A leaked cable from Secretary of State Marco Rubio instructs embassies to pause F, M, and J visa appointments until new guidance is issued. Though details remain vague, the vetting is tied to executive orders on terrorism and antisemitism raising concerns about delays, & unclear standards.
U.S. to revoke Chinese student visas in major escalation of tensions with Beijing
The Trump administration will "aggressively revoke" visas of Chinese students, especially those tied to the Communist Party or studying in sensitive fields, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced. The move has drawn sharp criticism from China and could impact hundreds of thousands of students. This follows earlier visa restrictions and a broader crackdown on international students. The policy has alarmed U.S. universities and Chinese families, disrupting one of the last meaningful links in U.S.-China relations.
